TDK Buyer FAQ: EPCOS/TDK, the 'Roland TDK' Confusion, and Multimeter Checks

Every few weeks, someone sends me the same batch of TDK questions. Some come from engineers who are new to EPCOS/TDK. Some come from buyers who trusted a product listing that looked official and wasn't. I've been on both sides. That is not always wrong, but it creates duplicate quotes and confusing preferred-vendor lists. Old EPCOS part numbers still exist, and distributor catalogs often list them as 'EPCOS / TDK' or 'TDK EPCOS'. The solution is boring: search the full part number on tdk.com or an authorized distributor. If one source shows the exact part and the other does not, I trust the one with the official datasheet.

2. Is 'Roland TDK' a real brand?

No. Not in TDK's official catalog, anyway. Roland and TDK are separate companies. Roland is known for musical instruments and audio gear; TDK is known for electronic components and power supplies. 'Roland TDK' is usually a storefront title where a reseller mashed two brand names together, or an SEO-heavy listing that copied random keywords. I once opened one of those listings and thought the datasheet looked fine. It didn't have a TDK part number on it. That's the warning sign. FTC advertising guidance (ftc.gov) says marketing claims should be truthful and not misleading. If a brand phrase doesn't appear on the manufacturer's own website, treat it as a typo until you can prove otherwise.

3. Can I use a multimeter to check a TDK component?

Sometimes. I keep a cheap 8110 digital multimeter on the bench. Nothing special, but it has continuity and diode mode. A multimeter can catch dead shorts and gross opens. It won't tell you capacitance, ESR, or a TVS diode's clamping voltage. I think the multimeter is a source of false confidence. Ask for lot codes and an authorized distributor's paperwork.

5. What's a TDK datasheet mistake that cost you?

The suffix. In my first year, 2017, I ordered 800 TDK capacitors with the right capacitance but the wrong dielectric. Actually, let me correct myself: I ordered the right dielectric but the wrong package size. Does it matter? The result was the same. 800 parts were unusable for the intended board layout. Roughly $1,650 wasted plus a two-week delay. After the second time, I made a checklist that includes package, temperature rating, tolerance, and tape-and-reel suffix. Because 'same part number' isn't the same as 'same full part number'. The base number can match while the suffix differs in reel diameter, packing quantity, or compliance status. A buyer I work with ordered what looked like a match because the first twelve characters matched. The last four didn't. The supplier's system caught it after the PO had already entered production planning. The delay wasn't really the supplier's fault. We fixed it with a simple pre-check: before generating a PO, verify the full manufacturer part number against the approved vendor's database. That process cut our review time from about four days to half a day. Not every order needs automation. But the repetitive part-number check definitely does.

7. Do I need an authorized distributor for every TDK order?

For most production orders, yes. I know it sounds like procurement boilerplate. Authorized distributors don't always have the lowest price, but they have the lot traceability and the updated datasheets. I once bought a small batch of TDK EPCOS varistors from a marketplace seller because it was in-stock and cheaper. The parts worked in the prototype, but I couldn't get the original certification sheet. The customer's audit flagged it. We replaced the batch from an authorized source and ate the extra cost.
