I'm not an engineer. I manage purchasing for a 41-person product development company—roughly $180,000 a year in orders, maybe $200,000 if you count the years we build extra prototypes. My role sits between the engineering team and a long list of suppliers, so I've learned to look at components differently from the people who spec them.

Then the invoice arrived from a small trading company, not from the manufacturer's authorized distribution channel. We got no certificate of compliance and no date code. Finance rejected the expense, and the project schedule slipped while the engineering team re-tested the parts. The savings disappeared before any of it reached production.
The price conclusion: Route B wins on the purchase order when you compare purchase orders only. Route A wins when you add verification, rejected expenses, and rework. For components going into products we plan to sell, that makes Route A cheaper in total cost.

From the outside, an industrial part from a reputable manufacturer and a cheaper no-name version can look exactly the same. The reality is in the details you cannot see: contact material, plating thickness, spring force, insertion cycle ratings, and operating temperature range. I learned this lesson the expensive way.
One of my biggest regrets was buying a component from a marketplace listing because the product page said equivalent to the TDK part number on our bill of materials. It worked for about a week. Then lab testing showed intermittent contact after 50 insertion cycles—far below what the approved specification required. I still kick myself for not requesting the datasheet before ordering.
Here is the counterintuitive part, though: not every no-name part is garbage. A specialist independent broker found old stock in sealed packaging and sent samples before we placed the full order. That transaction saved us from replacing an expensive machine.

If the part is going into a product you intend to ship to a customer, choose Route A: genuine TDK components through an authorized distributor, with documentation and an audit trail. If you are building a bench prototype, repairing old equipment, or chasing an obsolete part, Route B can work—provided you verify the seller, ask for samples, and inspect the parts before they touch a design.
When I search for TDK products online and see a marketplace result from a different brand—something labeled with a name like Magic Max instead of TDK—I do not get annoyed anymore. I close the tab. The source of a component tells you more than the part number alone.
