Application Spotlight

5G Base Station Power Supply Design

A major base station OEM needed to consolidate its passive BOM for a 64T64R Massive MIMO radio unit. The design required 1,200+ MLCCs per board for FPGA and PA decoupling, with X7R capacitors maintaining at least 4 uF effective capacitance under 12V DC bias. TDK's C2012X7R1C475K (4.7uF/16V, 0805) was selected after SEAT simulation confirmed 4.2 uF retained capacitance at operating voltage. The project used 15 TDK inductor part numbers across 8 voltage rails, reducing supplier count from four to one and cutting procurement lead time from 14 weeks to 6 weeks.

Data Center 48V Power Architecture Migration

A hyperscale data center operator transitioning from 12V to 48V bus architecture required high-current inductors with saturation current above 30A and DCR below 1 m-ohm for 48V-to-1V direct conversion. TDK's SPM12565 series (1.0 uH / 35A Isat / 0.55 m-ohm DCR) met the electrical requirements in a 12.5 x 6.5 mm footprint. The Lambda HFE2500 rectifier shelf provided 96.2% efficiency at 50% load, reducing annual cooling costs by an estimated $18 per rack compared to the previous 94% efficient platform.
