They have the inventory, the technical support, and the ability to handle small-to-mid sized orders efficiently. When I tried to get a quote directly from TDK for a small run of custom inductors, the lead time was 20 weeks and the minimum order quantity was insane. The same thing through a distributor? They had a standard part that was close enough, in stock, and cost less. Going direct is for the big boys, or for parts that absolutely cannot be substituted.
6. Is there anything TDK isn't good for? I don't want to make a mistake.
This is a good question, and it's the kind of thing I wish more suppliers were honest about. I'd say if you need the absolute cheapest component for a non-critical, high-volume product, TDK might not be the first place to look. Their pricing is competitive for the quality you get, but they're not a budget brand. Also, if you need a highly specialized, niche application component that only one smaller company makes, TDK might not have it. Their strength is in broad, reliable, high-quality standard parts. For us, that's perfect. For a one-off prototype with weird specs? I'm calling a specialty distributor first. It's about knowing where the value actually is.
